What a funeral director does
A funeral director takes the person into their care, helps you plan the service, books the venue, celebrant and cemetery or crematorium, prepares the paperwork, and usually registers the death for you. Some also arrange livestreams, printed orders of service and death notices. Our guide to planning and paying for a funeral lists the decisions you'll make together.
Questions to ask
- Can you send an itemised quote in writing, not just a package price?
- What is your simplest, lowest-cost option?
- Which costs are paid to others (cemetery, crematorium, celebrant, death certificate), and are they in the quote?
- Do you know our tradition or community well, and can you help with its customs?
- Can you livestream the service, and is there a charge?
- When do you need payment, and can the bank pay you from the person's account?
- Are you independent, or part of a larger group?
Comparing quotes
Prices for similar funerals vary a lot, so get at least two itemised quotes before you commit. The ACCC suggests asking for an itemised quote in writing. ACCC Moneysmart puts the cost of a funeral at around $8,000 to $20,000, depending on what you choose. Moneysmart Our funeral cost calculator helps you check a quote line by line.
